The man accused of kidnapping his mother from a Reno care facility is now in police custody after a long standoff that ended early Friday morning in Los Angeles.

52-year-old Roger Hillygus was arrested early Friday morning. His mother, 80-year-old Susan Hillygus was found uninjured.

Authorities says Roger had barricaded himself in an apartment on Bellflower Boulevard in southern California with his mother.

Susan suffers from dementia and requires medication which authorities say Roger didn't have.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department first responded to a call of a missing person around 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

When deputies arrived on scene and tried to talk with him, Roger took his mother and barricaded himself inside a bedroom.

A special enforcement bureau and special weapons team also responded - along with a crisis negotiation team.

Original Story: Reno Police say they have arrested a former Mineral County Sheriff in connection with the alleged kidnapping of Susan Hillygus, who was reported missing earlier this month from a care facility. Hillygus and her son, Roger are still missing.

Police say 59-year-old Stewart Evans Handte was arrested Wednesday for his alleged role in the kidnapping of Susan Hillygus.

Handte is also a former Tribal Police Chief for the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. (read statement below)

Handte was booked into the Washoe County Jail on also a charge of conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

Through the investigation, police say they learned that Handte went to the care facility with Hillygus' son, Roger Hillygus and gave fake information to facility staff and then left with Susan Hillygus.

At this time, police say Roger and his mother remain missing.

Roger was last known to be driving a white 1994 Honda Accord with NV plates 885YKR possibly heading to California and has ties to Fallon, Dayton, Nevada and Truckee, California as well as potential contacts elsewhere in the state of California to include the Portola area.

Reno Police say Susan Hillygus is described as white, 5'3" tall with a 'slight' build with gray hair and hazel eyes.

They said she was last seen wearing a white sweater with blue and gold stripes.

Reno Police said the suspect, Roger Hillygus is described as white, around 6' tall and weighs around 190 pounds.

They said he was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt and a gray and white baseball style hat.
