The county road from Elgin to Carp is currently closed and will be partially closed for up to 10 days as crews clear the wreckage.
The sheriff's office says Union Pacific is working to get the area cleaned up and the road back open as quickly as they can.
There's no immediate word on what caused the derailment, or if there are any injuries.
This derailment comes less than a month after a separate derailment near Wells in Elko County.
Deputies say that train was carrying munitions including grenades and bombs, but the rail cars containing the munitions were on the opposite end of the train, away from the derailment. Deputies say aluminum oxide was also on the train.
Union Pacific says some diesel was also spilled in the incident. No one was hurt.
