[RENO RODEO RELEASE]

06/29/2019

RENO, Nev. (June 29, 2019) -- When the dust settled on the 100th celebration of the Reno Rodeo, there were some very happy rodeo contestants heading out of town. The rodeo marks the start of the busy summer rodeo season and winning here gives contestants momentum as they head into “Cowboy Christmas,” which includes all of the rodeos held over the Fourth-of-July Holiday.

Another sell-out crowd cheered on the competitors who did not disappoint with some record-breaking rides and times.

The Silver Spurs belong to bareback rider Leighton Berry, of Weatherford, Texas, after his 82 point ride on Flying U Rodeo’s Comanchero, giving him a 251.5 total on three. The bronc Comanchero was selected for the NFR three times, where he has won three go-rounds. The fastest ride of the night went to Wyatt Bloom with an 87 on his re-ride. No.7 in the world Austin Foss, Terrebonne, Ore., landed in the second place spot after scoring 82 points on a re-ride, giving him a 250 on three. Mullen, Nebraska’s Steven Dent’s 85.5 on Diamond G Rodeo’s Cool Hand Luke secured him in the third place slot with his 249.5 total on three.

Denell Henderson, of Damascus, Ark., had the fastest time of the night with a 4.4, but it was J.D. Struxness with the win, finishing the night with 14.3 total on three. Leading Rookie of the Year for 2019, Henderson landed in the second place spot with 14.7 total on three. Jake Kraupie, Bridgeport, Neb., and Cameron Morman, Glen Ullin, N.D., tied for the third place spot with 15 total on three.

Ryan Reed and heeler Wyatt Hansen of Oakdale, Calif., had the fastest time of the night with a 5.3 but it wasn’t enough to put them in the lead. With an average of 17.4 on three, they tied for second with David Key, Stephenville, Texas, and eight-time world champion Rich Skelton, Llano, Texas. Header Chad Masters, of Cedar Hill, Tenn., and Joseph Harrison, of Overbook, Okla., won tonight’s Silver Spurs by a tenth of a second with a 17.3 on three. Harrison rode Lula Dual, the 2018 Reserve AQHA/PRCA Heel Horse of the Year. Bubba Buckaloo, Kingston, Okla., and partner Shay Dixon Carroll round out the top three with a 17.9 on three.

It was an exciting night for saddle bronc fans, with Wade Sundell of Boxholm, Iowa setting a new arena record with his 92 point ride on Flying 5 Rodeo’s Spring Planting, the same horse that Joe Lufkin set the arena record with earlier this week, giving him a 250 total on three. However, it was Visalia California native Lefty Holman’s 89.5 on Big Bend Rodeo’s Kool Toddy that earned the Silver Spurs, with 255.5 total on three. Sterling Crawley of Stephenville, Texas rounded out third with 253 total on three.

In tie-down roping, Ty Harris of San Angelo, Texas grabbed the Silver Spurs with a 27.5 on three. He had the fastest time in three rounds with 7.7 seconds. Harris was the 2018 Resistol Rookie of the Year in tie-down roping and won the RAM Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo and College National Finals Rodeo in 2018. Marcos Costa, Menard, Texas grabbed second with a 28.1 on three and Caleb Smidt, Bellville, Texas, took third with a 28.5 on three.

Jill Welsh had the fastest time around the barrels at this year’s Reno Rodeo at an impressive 17.06 seconds, but it was not enough to put her on top. It was Ivy Hurst, of Springer, Okla., with her 17.11-second ride that earned the Silver Spurs giving her a 51.58 on three. Shali Lord of Lamar Colo. earned second with a combined 51.76 on three and Megan McLeod-Sprague, of Marsing, Idaho, rounded out third with a combined 51.85 on three.

Sage Steele Kimzey of Strong City, Okla., proved why he is No. 1 in the world. He took the win by a whopping 6.5 points ahead of the second place winner with his 90.5 point ride, earning him a combined 176 on two. Clayton Sellars, of Fruitland Park, Fla., earned second with his 87.5 point ride on Flying U Rodeo’s Bringin’ Trouble, giving him a combined 169.5 on two. Cullen R. Telfer, of Thonotosassa, Fla., took third with his 88 point ride on Powder River Rodeo’s Countin’ Cards, earning a 167.5 on two.
