Nevada Softball Wins Regular Season Finale at San Jose State
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Nevada softball team finishes the regular season 27-25, 11-13 overall and goes out with a win over San Jose State, 2-1. Sierra Mello with the game tying run and Kenzi Goins with the go-ahead RBI, both in the sixth inning helped life the Pack over the Spartans.
Kali Sargent pitched another complete game, going the full seven innings with three strikeouts and zero earned runs. The senior is now, 7-10 on the year and is her ninth complete game.
Sadaria McAlister had her 19th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. The team combined for another four hits in the contest, taking in to count the triple from Mello and the base hit from Goins.
The game was pretty quiet until the sixth inning. San Jose State scored a single run on a bad throw that would have been the third out, early in the second inning but until the Pack made some noise in the sixth. San Jose State had several chances, including bases loaded in the fourth inning but a pop up that was snagged from Lauren Gutierrez left all three on.
The Spartans had a base hit in the fifth and sixth inning, but the Pack defense forced them to be left on. In the sixth inning, Mello was the up to bat with two outs but knocked a single that turned bad for the Spartans fast; it ended up being a triple and a bobble in the outfield landed her home. McAlister laid down a single and was scored on a single RBI from Goins, all with two outs, to take the 2-1 lead.
Sargent and the defense got the last three outs in the bottom of the seventh to hold on to the lead and take the win over the Spartans.
Nevada will now wait until Sunday, May 12 to see what teams are chosen in the NCAA Tournament and who received bids for the NISC Tournament. If the Pack is selected for the NISC, it will be the third consecutive year the team will attend a postseason tournament.
