A new restaurant is coming to the Sparks Marina in 2019.

Tom Turner, the owner of four restaurants in Lake Tahoe, is opening The Sparks Water Bar in the coming months.

“It’s going to be a waterfront restaurant with a big deck,” says Turner.

Turner is most well-known for owning Gar Woods Grill and Pier on the north end of Lake Tahoe.

Some of his most faithful customers are excited that he is expanding into the Truckee Meadows.

"There's a lot of competition down there with the casinos and restaurants, if the quality is the same and he runs the place like he runs this here, he'll have a successful business,: says Henry Reimann, a frequent Gar Wood customer.

Turner says now is a great time to be opening his first restaurant in northern Nevada because there is so much growth in the area.

“You look at the Sparks area, you look at Reno, you look at USA Parkway, you look at all the areas that are growing, let alone just the apartments around here, the two new hotels, all those places, it clearly is a spot that is going to have tremendous occupancy,” says Turner.

His new 13,000 square foot restaurant will occupy the old Anchors Bar & Grill that overlooks the Sparks Marina.

Renovations to the existing building are expected to cost about $3 million.

“Just the pathway alone will cost $800,000 just to move the path out, build a bridge, do the plantings, do all the stuff that’s required of us,” says Turner.

Construction to build an outdoor patio for the restaurant will begin in February. Since the patio will be built on the marina’s walking path, the path will have a temporary detour until June.

A section of the path will be closed on the northeast corner of the marina. People will be detoured to Harbour Cove Drive and will have to cross to the east side of the street and then back across to Lincoln Way.

Turner says the Sparks Water Bar will have a little flavor of all his restaurants, but will also take on some new ideas as well. The restaurant is set to open around September.

“We hope that people will enjoy it, where else can you go outside and enjoy this view,” says Turner.
