According to Mental Health America’s most recent rankings, Nevada is ranked 51st (behind D.C.)  in mental health services and availability.

Which is why a local family health clinic is trying a new and unique way to fight depression. Duncan Family Healthcare says they are the first and only provider of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy in Reno, and have already had success on dozens of their own patients.

And it all starts by a small magnetic coil placed on your head. "The magnetic treatment, when it pulses over and over again, it trains those neurons in our brain to start firing correctly which helps relieve depression symptoms," explains Dr. Cameron Duncan or Duncan Family Healthcare.

This is how it works - the electromagnet painlessly delivers a magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression. It is believed to activate regions of the brain that have decreased activity in depression. And, while the treatment is widely covered by insurance and has been cleared by the FDA for over a decade, it is just now beginning to gain more traction as physicians throughout the U.S. are offering the non-drug therapy at their practices and patients nationwide are crediting TMS for saving their lives.

Duncan Family Healthcare says that clinical studies show 58% of patients significantly responded to treatment and 37% actually achieved complete remission of their depression symptoms, including some of their own. "When they are going to TMS I am still seeing them, Dr. Duncan might still be seeing them and they might not notice they are getting better but we are seeing it and we can point it out to them," says Shanley Melody, Mental Health Manger at Duncan Family Healthcare.

Duncan Family Healthcare says that most insurances cover for TMS treatment and is FDA approved.
