Medicare beneficiaries will have another opportunity to change their 2019 health insurance coverage with the new Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP). Beginning Jan. 1 through March 31, plan members will be able to make changes to their existing plans. The new OEP will take the place of the existing Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period.
The OEP differs from the Annual Election Period (AEP) which ends Dec. 7, 2018. During AEP, Medicare members are able to switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan, transition to a new Medicare Advantage Plan from an existing one, join a Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage plan, join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan and more.
The new OEP will allow existing Medicare Advantage Plan members to switch to a new Medicare Advantage Plan. This will also allow time to drop existing Medicare Advantage coverage and return to Original Medicare, Parts A and B. Members will be able to join or dis-enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, although most Medicare Advantage Plans include prescription drug coverage.
During the new OEP, Original Medicare plan members will not be permitted to join a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Original Medicare plan members may not switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to a new plan.
Although some limitations are attached, the new OEP provides Medicare Advantage Plan members more flexibility and time to make healthcare decisions.
