Reno 1868 FC Release

The series sweep wasn’t meant to be as Reno 1868 FC dropped its second-straight match Wednesday night, losing 2-1 to Western Conference leader Real Monarchs SLC.

Early on Wednesday, it looked as if it was going to be Reno’s night as forward Brian Brown scored an absolute screamer in the ninth minute to put Reno up 1-0.

The goal was Brown’s ninth of the season, making him the third leading scorer in club history passing Chris Wehan.

However, a minute later, the Monarchs equalized as Chandler Hoffman found Charlie Adams in the box for a goal to make it 1-1. Reno’s struggles continued in the first half and finally came to a head in the 41st minute.

Monarchs midfielder Maikel Chang found the back of the net from close distance to make it 2-1 going into the half.

Reno came out much stronger in the second half pressing high and keeping the pace in their favor. Reno created multiple chances including two balls that hit off the post.

The first was Brown’s near equalizer in the 67th minute that ricocheted off the top crossbar. Defender Duke Lacroix nearly provided the late-game dramatics as his shot hit the woodwork on the far post in the 90th minute. In total, Reno finished with 16 total shots and four on target.

Wednesday’s loss was the first consecutive loss since April 14 and ended Reno’s 11-match unbeaten road streak.

Reno will have another bye week before hitting the road Aug. 19 to play Swope Park Rangers. Reno returns home to Greater Nevada Field on Aug. 25 to face rival Sacramento Republic FC at 7:15 p.m.
