Kathy Augustine's Family Outraged About 48 Hours Mystery Show

Nearly one year has passed since former State Controller, Kathy Augustine died. Investigators believe her fourth husband, Chaz Higgs, killed her with a paralytic drug. The high-profile case has received national attention. CBS' 48 Hours Mystery recently aired a special on the murder investigation. What was said in the hour-long show infuriated Kathy's family.

Kathy's brother, Phil Alfano, sat down with Channel 2 and watched the show with us. Alfano said Kathy's third husband's sons brought the most pain to his family. When asked in the show if they thought Kathy worked with Chaz Higgs to kill their father, Charles Augustine, Greg said, "Speculating at this point, but I think she did. It was very convenient for my dad just to slip away." Alfano said it is absurd to think Kathy would conspired to kill anyone. He also said this is the first time Greg has ever mentioned his suspicion.

Alfano now questions the boys' motives. Greg and Larry Augustine said Kathy got their father's money after his death, and although they say it wasn't much, they said, "it is enough when you are going into an impeachment."

However, Alfano tells us Chuck died in August 2003 and Kathy's ethics hearing was more than a year later. Plus, the Clark County Coroner's Office confirmed Chuck died of a stroke after his body was exhumed more than six months ago.

Alfano said the focus now needs to be his sister's mysterious murder.  Higgs' Defense team wants the murder trial pushed back until they received more autopsy test results from the FBI.
