Thousands of officers honored a 22-year-old police officer who was shot and killed just weeks into the job while responding to a traffic crash in a Northern California college town.

Friday's service for Davis Police Officer Natalie Corona was held at the University of California, Davis.

UC Davis said it expected up to 6,000 officers in addition to family members, friends and members of the public.

Corona was shot and killed on Jan. 10 when she responded alone to the scene of a three-car crash.

Police are still investigating the motive for the attack. The gunman has been identified as 48-year-old Kevin Limbaugh. Police say the convict was banned from owning firearms and took his own life after shooting Corona.

Earlier, California Governor Gavin Newsom said he and his wife, Jennifer, were saddened by the death of a woman he called "courageous" who died "protecting her protecting her community from harm."

This is the full released statement:

“Jennifer and I are terribly saddened to learn of the death of Officer Corona. Officer Corona was protecting her community from harm when she was tragically shot by an armed subject. Despite the valiant efforts of paramedics who rushed her to the hospital, and UC Davis Medical Center personnel, she succumbed to her injuries. We join all Californians in mourning the loss of this courageous officer and extend our deepest condolences to Officer Corona’s family, friends, and coworkers.”

In an announcement from the Associated Students of UC Davis, Senator Ricky Zapardiel on his Facebook page, the officer who was shot in downtown Davis has died.

"There is a heavy police presence in downtown Davis and on campus, which will likely continue until the person is found. There are students and staff still on campus and police will be assisting as much as they can to escort people to get home tonight," the post reads. "There are a limited number of police officers but mutual aid has been called in."

The University of California, Davis, is warning residents to shelter in place after an officer-involved shooting broke out on Thursday evening.

They said it happened in downtown Davis and a suspect is still outstanding.

They said the suspect is described as a white male in his 20's. He has an average build and was last seen wearing a blue baseball cap, black jacket, blue or tan jeans and black tactical boots.

UC Davis is urging residents to avoid downtown Davis until further notice.

Our sister station CBS13 in Sacramento says a female officer was shot, according to Davis Police.

They said she sustained a bullet wound and has serious injuries.

CBS13 says it happened after the officer responded to a three-car crash in downtown Davis.

This is a developing story.
