South Lake Tahoe Police have a man in custody accused of trying to carjack a firefighter.

The incident happened north of Lake Tahoe Blvd. near Emerald Bay Road early Wednesday evening.

Police say the unidentified firefighter slammed on his brakes to avoiding hitting the suspect, Jacob Lewis.

Police say Lewis then tried to get inside the firefighter's car by attempting to open the passenger side door, where the firefighter's child was sitting. Police say Lewis started hitting the window with his fists, then walked around to the driver's side window and got into a fight with the firefighter.

Police say Lewis somehow jumped into the driver's seat and tried to drive off with the child inside the car.

The firefighter got the suspect out of the car and that's when the suspect ran off.

The firefighter took a photo of the man and shared it with law enforcement who then posted it to social media.

A few hours later, police say they got a call from a local business owner who said he thought the photo was of a former employee.

Police say Lewis was known to law enforcement with cases going back 11 years including battery with serious injury and drug use.

Authorities say booking photos of Lewis matched the one taken by the firefighter in this case and showed a unique tattoo Lewis had on his right calf.

Officers say they found Lewis at his home and he denied any involvement in this case.

Lewis was arrested without incident.

The 27-year old was booked into the El Dorado County Jail on charges of attempted carjacking, attempted kidnapping and battery. He is currently being held on $405,000 bail.
