Temperatures have cooled off quite a bit with lows expected to dip below freezing even out at the Reno Airport Monday morning and there is a Freeze Watch posted as a result. Looking back at the record books we usually see our first freeze at the airport sometime around the middle of October. A low from the north dropped our temperatures Thursday and a second front will move through Sunday too cool us off even more.
While a front will move through this weekend, no rain is expected in our area, just some gusty winds and cool temperatures. As the low moves south we will continue to have lots of sunshine in the forecast. All of the moisture is staying to our south and keeping the rain away from us.
Temperatures can vary quite a bit in our area, mainly because the Sierra is close by. You can drive a few minutes and the elevation changes by 500 feet. Which means even though the airport will experience it’s first freeze of the season Monday morning, most parts of the Reno area already have or will tonight, especially places like Galena or Arrowcreek. Carson City could even reach freezing Friday morning.
Truckee is usually one of our coldest spots to forecast for, because it’s located in a valley with not a lot of industry. This area is also prone to fog because of its location. After the rain we’ve received this week, Truckee could be waking up to some fog again Friday morning.
The bottom line is to make sure you protect your tomato plants because temperatures are falling fast overnight. Have a great week.
