Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says the investigation is ongoing but it appears that the driver who crashed a car on Sunday shot himself in the chest.

They say no threat exists to the community.

Officials say around 2:30 p.m., on Sunday, a Carson City Fire/Paramedic crew reported a crash at the intersection of I-580 southbound and College Parkway in Carson City.

Paramedics began treating the driver and found that he had a small caliber gunshot wound to his chest. The Washoe County resident was transported to Renown Medical Center by CareFlight for treatment.

His identity is being withheld at this time and officials have not yet released his immediate medical condition.

Authorities say the gun used has been recovered.

The I-580 and College Parkway exit was closed for most of the afternoon as investigators processed the car and tried to gather more information. The off-ramp reopened just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

At this time, the driver has not been able to provide any leads. Carson City Detectives say he is expected to survive, but they haven't been able to interview him yet.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to contact the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at 775-887-2677.
