Almost half of Washoe County School District's student population qualifies for free or reduced price lunches. During the summer break, a lack of those free lunches can put an additional strain on the families.

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada sponsors the Kids Cafe Summer Meals Program to keep them from going hungry over summer break. In past years, Marketing and Communications Coordinator Aramelle Wheeler says they serve approximately 7,000 kids through the program.

There are only two requirements: you must be between the ages of 1-18, and you must eat the meal on-site.

The mobile, free lunch program delivers nutritious meals to about 40 locations around Washoe County, Mondays through Fridays. To see the location nearest you, visit their program schedule here

In Carson City, there is a similar program called "Food for Thought." They serve free lunches at two locations Mondays through Fridays from 11 AM until 12:15 PM:

  • Park Terrace Park; 1327 La Loma Drive
  • The Bridge Church; 901 N. Stewart Street
