Governor Sandoval Signs Executive Order Creating Sporting Event Committee

Posted: Updated:

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval signed an executive order this week creating the Southern Nevada Sporting Event Committee.

The Executive Order allows committee members to form a local organizing committee for the National Football League Draft or other potential events.

It will also evaluate whether the Nevada Legislature should establish a permanent Sports Committee.

“I was excited to hear that Las Vegas is one of five finalists under consideration to host the NFL Draft in 2019 or 2020. Las Vegas is home to the Golden Knights hockey franchise, a United Soccer League team, the Las Vegas Aces basketball team, a Triple-A baseball team and will soon be the home of the Raiders football franchise. With the new Nevada and the existence of these teams in Las Vegas, additional opportunities to attract major sporting events and associated activities to our state are arising, especially with the addition of the new stadium. As such, I believe it is prudent for the Sporting Event Committee to examine the possibilities and report back to me and the Legislature on what’s possible and how Nevada might secure new and bigger sporting events.”

The Southern Nevada Sporting Event Committee will include:

  • Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development
  • Chairman of the Stadium Authority Board
  • Mayor of the City of Las Vegas
  • Chair of the Clark County Commission
  • President and Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce
  • Chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education
  • One or more representatives of professional sports teams based in Nevada or committed to locating in Nevada
  • Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority
  • Chair of the Board of Trustees of Las Vegas Events
  • Six representatives of the Nevada Resort Association and any other person deemed necessary by the Governor.

The Governor will appoint the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Committee and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development will provide administrative support to the Committee.

The Southern Nevada Sporting Event Committee is required to submit a report to the Governor and the Legislative Commission on or before December 31, 2018.
