More than 75 percent of Americans suffer from heel and foot pain according to a recent report published by the American Podiatric Medical Association with half those affected experiencing decreased mobility and reduced quality of life. Further studies from the New England Journal of Medicine indicate a significant portion of those cases stem from plantar fasciitis. With this in mind, San Antonio podiatrist, Dr. Ed Davis, DPM, FACFAS has launched his latest lineup of state-of-the-art treatments.

“Plantar fasciitis and its resulting heel pain is one of the most common reasons patients come to us for help,” said Dr. Davis. “We offer a wide range of treatments for this prevalent condition, but new developments in our field of specialty have brought about an array of advanced options for dealing with the more difficult cases. Some of the previous techniques provide only temporary relief for certain patients whereas others are fairly invasive and require more lengthy recovery times; however, these latest solutions offer more permanent and less intrusive alternatives.”

Tasked with supporting the foot, the plantar fascia is a ligament running from the heel to the base of the toes. When the plantar fascia is strained due to excessive activity, pregnancy, obesity and other issues, this ligament becomes inflamed, resulting in plantar fasciitis. If not treated promptly, the ligament tissue can become further damaged and begin to degenerate, a condition known as plantar fasciosis.

Among the advanced plantar fasciitis treatments offered by Dr. Davis is extracorporeal shockwave therapy, or ESWT. This non-invasive procedure entails the use of sonic pressure to encourage regeneration of the affected tissue. Another alternative is the Topaz Procedure, a treatment using radiofrequency to remove damaged tissue and performed via minimal holes in the heel. Platelet-rich plasma injections are likewise available, a procedure in which a patient’s blood is drawn, concentrated and injected into the affected area to stimulate healing.

Concluded Dr. Davis, “These revolutionary new treatments can provide non-invasive or minimally invasive relief for patients experiencing plantar fasciitis as well as other conditions in this category. Though not all of them are appropriate for all cases, each certainly has its benefits. We invite anyone suffering from heel and foot pain to contact us for a consultation to determine the cause of their discomfort and the best course of action.”

As a well-established podiatrist in San Antonio, Dr. Davis has provided specialized foot and ankle care for more than 25 years. He graduated from the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine during the early 1980s after which he completed his residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. In 1991, Dr. Davis received board certification from the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
