Man who ran red light gets 6 months in jail for deadly crash

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A man who pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter for accelerating through a red light and causing a crash that killed another man has been sentenced to six months behind bars.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Sunday that 41-year-old Moroni Calvo was sentenced last week for the April 2016 crash that killed Quirino Ortega.

Calvo's defense attorney, Donn Prokopius, asked for traffic school, a suspended sentence and a fine. He said Calvo was repentant.

Valvo apologized to Ortega's widow, Leslie Ortega, at sentencing. He told her the crash was "truly an accident."

Ortega had been driving his granddaughter to college when the crash happened. The 19-year-old was seriously injured in the crash.
