High School Club Volunteers Partner with Red Cross to Assemble Smoke Alarm Kits

Posted: Updated:

The American Red Cross sees the increase in home fires, so local high school club volunteers are partnering up with Red Cross volunteers to assemble smoke alarm installation kits for our community's most affected neighborhoods.

American Red Cross of Northern Nevada says their volunteers have responded to 134 home fires in the last year. So, volunteers are attempting to change that by contributing to a project that will make homes safer.

On Saturday, Bishop Manogue High School club volunteers assembled smoke alarms with the Red Cross as part of Martin Luther King Jr. Day service.

“Red Cross volunteers install free smoke alarms in homes that do not have functional smoke alarms, and volunteers educate residents about home fire safety,” Zanny Marsh, Executive Director, American Red Cross of Northern Nevada said. “You may have only two minutes or less to escape safely from a home fire and a functional smoke alarm may give you essential time to escape, reducing the risk of injury or death.”

Here are some tips they offer to help prevent a fire in their home:

  • Keep all potential sources of fuel - paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs - at least three feet away from sources of heat.
  • Never leave portable heaters and fireplaces unattended.
  • Place space heaters on a level, hard and nonflammable surface. Keep children and pets away from space heaters. Look for models that shut off automatically if the heater falls over.
  • Never use a cooking range or oven to heat your home.
  • Keep fire in your fireplace by using a glass or metal fire screen.

To request installation, please call (775) 954-1185. There is no fee or additional obligation.
