Catharsis brings Burning Man spirit to nation's capital

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - A group of local Washington artists and activists is working to bring a small slice of Burning Man to the National Mall.

The Catharsis on the Mall begins Friday and continues through Sunday with round-the-clock seminars and performances in tents, stages and camps near the Washington Monument.

Highlights will include a 70-foot-long metal dragon on wheels that will roll through the streets during a Sunday morning march. On Saturday night, a small wooden temple will be burned.

Catharsis on the Mall organizers wanted to erect a 47-foot sculpture of a naked woman, but the National Park Service rejected that idea.

Organizers envision a scaled-down version of Burning Man, the annual festival in the Nevada desert that draws thousands and features outlandish costumes and the burning of a massive wooden figure.
