Man wielding hunk of wood shot by Southern California police

Posted: Updated:

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - Southern California authorities say police shot a man who confronted them with a large piece of wood after he fled from a hospital where he'd been detained on a mental health hold.

Officials say the 46-year-old sustained a non-life-threatening wound in the shooting Wednesday in Simi Valley.

Police say officers responded to reports of a "mentally distressed" man who had fled from a hospital. They located him at a nearby medical clinic, where he broke a window and a wooden bench. Employees locked themselves in offices as police confronted the man, who was wearing only hospital pants and wielding a piece from the broken bench.

Police said in a statement that officers opened fire as they tried to take him into custody.

The Ventura County Star reports (http://bit.ly/2i5eKAp) the man could face charges including assault with a deadly weapon.
