Hotels and Vacation Homes Stay Busy During Hot August Nights

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of people race to the Truckee Meadows every August to get their fill of classic hot rods. Many of these out of towners have been helping to sell out Reno’s hotels during the popular event. Tracie Barnthouse with the Atlantis says extended vacations are keeping the rooms booked longer than usual.

"It absolutely helps our economy as well and we're able to adjust our rates based on the demand for our rooms," says Barnthouse.

This year, there also seems to be another route that vacationers are choosing outside of the hotels.

Oscar and Debbie Sessions have been hosts for the popular vacation rental service Airbnb for the last two years. They say the room they rent out is occupied by guests all the time, especially during special events.

"For something like Hot August Nights we've heard from other Airbnb hosts that they get recurring visitors that come back year over year," says Sessions.

It didn't come to a surprise to them when Airbnb announced that 500 guests chose a vacation home rental during this year's Hot August Nights. That's the largest number of guests the company has seen stay in Reno at one time since its inception nine years ago.

"I do think year over year we're going to see more and more people choosing this kind of renting," says Sessions.
