City of Sparks Preparing for Potential Flash Flooding

Posted: Updated:

With continued thunderstorm activity predicted throughout the week, the city of Sparks is preparing for any flash flooding activity that could occur.

“We are closely monitoring the weather and flood prone areas in Sparks,” said Utility Manager Andrew Hummel.

Maintenance crews are on standby in case any debris clean-up or road closures are needed.

“The safety of drivers and Sparks residents is our number one priority,” Hummel said. Drivers are asked to report any flooding activity in the city of Sparks by calling customer service at (775) 353- 5555 during regular business hours or the non-emergency dispatch line at (775) 353-2231 after regular business hours.

OTHER FLOOD SAFETY TIPS AND INFORMATION:

• Stay out of flooded areas until water recedes and public safety officials deem the area safe to enter. The public must stay out of flood waters.  The potential for open manhole covers presents a serious danger.

• Residents are asked to help support the community by clearing storm drains and gutters of any debris and ice that may be near homes. This will help reduce the threat of flooding in the roadways.

• When Flooded, Turn Around, Don’t Drown!

• Avoid walking or driving through flood waters.

• Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and two feet of water can sweep your vehicle away.

• If there is a chance of flash flooding, move immediately to higher ground. Flash floods are the #1 cause of weather-related deaths in the US.

• If floodwaters rise around your car but the water is not moving, abandon the car and move to higher ground. Do not leave the car and enter moving water.
