County Gets Funds to Better Combat Sex Crimes

Posted: Updated:

The Washoe County Board of County Commissioners approved a grant worth more than $1.6 million from the Nevada Attorney General's Office at its meeting Tuesday to fight sexual assault.

The money will go towards six full-time DNA Criminalists for one year and a lab remodel to make room for the new employees. The money will also pay for costs associated with testing sexual assault kits collected from January 2015 through June 2019.

The county says it expects to get another 350 sexual assault kits each year for DNA testing after the passage of AB 97 in the 2017 Nevada Legislative Session, which requires testing to be finished 120 days after it gets to the lab.

"We've come a long way; this was a great collaboration for the Attorney Genaral's Office, the Legislature and the counties," says County Manager John Slaughter, "While we are pleased that this one-year grant is approved, we need to immediately begin working on permanent funding."

With the area finally seeing some more winter weather this week, REMSA officials are reminding people to be prepared for anything, during the colder temperatures. So far this winter, REMSA has only responded to about five calls regarding hypothermia and frostbite. Fortunately, that number is down from around 19 this same time last year. But, officials say that is no reason to be lax about winter weather preparedness.
