Ask the Doctor: Hair Loss

Posted: Updated:

Unless you're one of the lucky few, there's a good chance we'll experience some hair thinning or balding. But there is a procedure being done in Reno to help re-grow your hair if you can handle using your own blood.

If you have a question, call 858-2222 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Dr. William Clearfield of Clearfield Medical Group can help answer your questions.

1)  RESEARCHERS SAY BY AGE 35 TWO-THIRDS OF AMERICAN MEN WILL EXPERIENCE SOME DEGREE OF HAIR LOSS.  AND BY AGE 50 - ABOUT 85% OF MEN NOTICE SIGNIFICANT THINNING.  WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?
"Hair loss is due to hormonal, genetic, stress or disease processes."

2)  YOU PERFORM A PROCEDURE USING SOMEONE'S OWN BLOOD TO HELP RE-GROW THEIR HAIR? HOW DOES IT WORK?
"The Hair Restoration Project is a 90-minute procedure beginning with our patented PRP harvest. We apply local anesthetics to the scalp, combine the PRP with the Acellbio matrix and nutrients, then inject the full scalp. Recovery time is minimal and pain is usually managed with over the counter ibuprofen. Mild swelling of the scalp and forehead is common for up to 48 hours. Using your own blood virtually guarantees acceptance by the body without reaction or rejection. It's minimally invasive, non-surgical, and typically require little to no downtime."

3)  HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE A DIFFERENCE?
"New hair sprouts as early as 2 months.  Four to eight months is a typical time frame for hair to thicken and become noticeable.  We lock in our gains with a Melatonin based scalp treatment to enhance the process."

4)  IS IT A PERMANENT SOLUTION AND WHO'S AN IDEAL CANDIDATE?
"Additional injections may be necessary every 2 years. While everyone responds differently, men with Male Pattern Hair Loss - especially early stage or any time hair thins on the scalp - are good candidates. We need at least a little natural "peach fuzz" for kindling or we won't be successful. Women with Female Pattern Hair Loss - all stages of hair loss - can benefit, too."
