The Salvation Army Collecting School Supplies

Posted: Updated:

The Salvation Army is collecting school supplies and back packs for at-risk children from Carson City, Douglas County and the surrounding communities through August 14.

This is the Salvation Army’s fourth year doing an Apple Tree school supply and back pack drive which is similar to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Angel Tree program. The Apple Tree program has “Apples” that have a child’s wishes on it to help donors shop and these trees can be found at any of the local businesses listed below.

The Salvation Army has over 300 requests for supplies, and plan to distribute donated supplies through their 661 Colorado St. location where a large portion of the back packs collected will be given directly to the local school districts for distribution to children in transition.

"A big part of a child's success in school is having the necessary supplies for the lessons they will be doing. In our constant goal of breaking the cycle poverty we want to give at-risk children every opportunity to succeed." Stated Captain Mark Cyr, commanding officer of the local Salvation Army.

A few suggestions for school supplies include: pencils, crayons, colored pencils, 3 ring binders, scientific calculators, back packs, pens, scissors, pencil sharpeners, pencil pouches, paper, note books, composite books, glues sticks, highlighters, etc. and a box of healthy cereal.

Captain Mark also stated that “The biggest shortages we have this year is pencils, crayons, colored pencils, 3 ring binders and the scientific calculators.”

Back packs and supplies can be dropped off at The Salvation Army, 661 Colorado St. Carson City, 89701 before August 14th. Online donations can be made at carsoncity.salvationarmy.org or at the Apple Tree locations.
