Coney Island Drive in Sparks Reopens to Traffic After Possible Hazardous Spill

Posted: Updated:

Sparks Police tell us that Coney Island Drive has reopened after an earlier possible hazardous material spill early Monday morning. Sparks Fire has since deemed the area safe.

Just before 6:00 a.m., Sparks Fire crews responded to a fire alarm at 230 Coney Island Drive. Crews say they observed water flowing from under a roll up door and light haze in the building caused by a small fire that burned near a potassium hydroxide drum. Officials say the building's sprinkler system knocked down the blaze. Fire investigators say one of the heaters on the drum overheated, causing the smoke.

The Regional Hazardous Material Team, Reno Fire and Sparks fire evacuated all businesses near the building as a precaution. Crews  also closed off one block to the east and west of Coney Island drive.

Police say businesses on the south side of Coney Island Drive are not affected.
