The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony to Hold Meeting on Wildfire Safety

Posted: Updated:

Several emergency response departments are teaming up to arm residents with the latest information about preventing fires and fire safety.

The community meeting is being held in light of the multiple wildfires we’ve seen in the area.

“Any spark—one started by a match to one caused by a lawnmower—can cause a wildfire,” said Hungry Valley Fire Coordinator Lance Chantler.

Chantler along with representatives from RSIC Tribal Police, Emergency Services, Housing, Planning and Public Works will host the  wildfire awareness meeting on Saturday, July 15 at 9 a.m., in the Hungry Valley Recreation Center, 9075 Eagle Canyon Rd., Sparks, Nev.

Attendees will learn about the ways to prevent wildfires and what to do during a wildfire. They will also learn about shooting, campfire and fireworks restrictions on tribal land, how homeowners should prepare for a wildfire, and how the RSIC staff prepares for wildfire season.

This free, public event will include breakfast.  After a panel discussion, a question and answer session will conclude the 90-minute meeting.

For more information about this community meeting about wildfire prevention contact Montooth at 775/842-2902 or at smontooth@rsic.org.

While many of us were able to enjoy the holiday at home with family, serving ourselves a plate of turkey, first-responders were busy at work, serving the community on Thanksgiving.  We rode along with Sergeant Bryan Adamson from the Reno Police Department for his holiday patrol.
