The Maxwell Football Club announced its preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award Monday morning with Nevada’s junior defensive end Malik Reed earning a spot on the list. The Bednarik Award is presented annually to the top defensive player in FBS college football.

Reed, a six-foot-one, 245-pound returning starter, is one of 86 defensive players from around the nation to be named to the watch list. He is also one of four to earn the preseason distinction from the Mountain West.

Reed posted a breakout sophomore season on his way to earning second team All-Mountain West honors. Reed’s 59 total tackles on the year were fifth-most on the team and ranked second among the league’s defensive linemen. Additionally Reed’s three fumbles forced tied for the team lead.

The winner of the 2017 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 7. The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on March 9.
