Reed Named to Bednarik Award Watch List

Posted: Updated:

The Maxwell Football Club announced its preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award Monday morning with Nevada’s junior defensive end Malik Reed earning a spot on the list. The Bednarik Award is presented annually to the top defensive player in FBS college football.

Reed, a six-foot-one, 245-pound returning starter, is one of 86 defensive players from around the nation to be named to the watch list. He is also one of four to earn the preseason distinction from the Mountain West.

Reed posted a breakout sophomore season on his way to earning second team All-Mountain West honors. The Alabama native, who served as a team captain, led the Wolf Pack with 9.5 tackles for loss, including 5.0 sacks, which tied for 10th in the league. Reed’s 59 total tackles on the year were fifth-most on the team and ranked second among the league’s defensive linemen. Additionally Reed’s three fumbles forced tied for the team lead.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced Oct. 30, while the three finalists will be unveiled Nov. 20. The winner of the 2017 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 7. The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on March 9.

Nevada opens the 2017 season under first-year head coach Jay Norvell on Saturday, Sept. 2, when it travels to Evanston, Ill. to play at Northwestern with kickoff set for 12:30 p.m. PT. Season tickets are on sale now by calling (775) 348-PACK or visiting NevadaWolfPack.com.
