Recreational Marijuana Sales Begin in Sparks

Posted: Updated:

The Sparks City Council voted on Monday to approve a code change that allows businesses to begin selling recreational marijuana under the Department of Taxation's early start guidelines.

On Saturday morning the first Sparks dispensary began selling recreationally. Greenleaf Wellness at 1730 Glendale Avenue is open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will be talking with people about how to use marijuana safely and legally.

Two other dispensaries that are eligible for the early start program have applied as well as 3 cultivation facilities and and 2 testing facilities

In other parts of northern Nevada:

  • Reno: Four dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana on July 1st.
  • Washoe County: The Washoe County Board of Commissioners has written proposed changes to allow them to adopt the early start regulations as well. There will be a second hearing on July 25th. If adopted on that day then 3 dispensaries and 1 cultivation facility could start operating as soon as August 4th.
  • Carson City formerly was not participating in the early start program but the Board of Supervisors met on Thursday and lifted that moratorium specifically for businesses that qualify for the early start program through the Nevada Dept of Taxation’s regulations. So they’ll still need to see those ordinances drafted and adopt them, but they are moving forward.
