Draw Fire Near Fallon 100% Contained, Burned 27,506 Acres

Posted: Updated:

The BLM says the Draw Fire burning 50 miles east of Fallon is now 100% contained. The 27,506-acre wildfire remains under investigation.

Crews will remain on scene mopping up Monday. They'll be patrolling the area for the next 48 hours as the anticipated winds will be of a concern.

The fire started last Friday night around 8:15 p.m. north of Highway 50. At one point the fire burned almost 6,000 acres in a single hour and forced the evacuation of the Alpine Village but no structures were lost or damaged. Several power poles for the high voltage line that provides electricity for Fallon and Fallon NAS and Reno have been damaged.

The BLM says concentrated efforts continue to protect Sage Grouse habitat, wild horse grazing areas (firefighters have observed the wild horses moving ahead of the fire, out of harms way), Wilderness Study Area, high voltage power transmission lines, the power substation, Pony Express Trail, as well as the Tungsten Geo Thermal Generating Plant currently under construction.
