A gritty last-minute effort by goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell was not enough as Reno 1868 FC’s seven-match unbeaten streak ended Monday in Sandy, Utah.
Reno lost 2-1 to Real Monarchs SLC in a match that ended in crazy fashion.
Tarbell nearly converted two goals in extra time missing one off the crossbar in the 91st minute and had a goal waived off in the 94th minute after an offside call.
Tarbell had positioned himself upfield as Reno was trying to level the game up after trailing 2-1 after the first half.
Real Monarchs SLC’s ninth-straight USL win (a new league record) started with a goal by Andrew Brody in the 22nd minute off a counter attack and assist by Sebastian Velasquez.
Reno 1868 FC would not go down quietly as Antoine Hoppenot scored 14 minutes later netting his fifth goal this season after beautiful turn in the box.
Hoppenot’s goal came off a Chris Wehan assist, Wehan’s fifth assist this season.
Reno 1868 FC appeared to have momentum heading into halftime after the Hoppenot goal.
However, in the third minute of extra time as the first half ticked down, Real Monarchs SLC defender Taylor Peay headed in a Sebastian Velasquez corner kick to put Real Monarchs SLC up 2-1.
Reno 1868 FC picked up the pace in the second half and created chances as time ticked down, especially from set pieces.
Substitute Junior Burgos served a ball from a free kick to captain Jimmy Ockford in the box in the 87th minute, but Ockford’s header missed by just inches.
In total, Reno 1868 FC finished with six shots on target and 13 total shots.
Reno 1868 FC still has one more game on the road this week before heading back to Reno for three-straight home matches.
Reno will play Portland Timbers 2 on Saturday in Portland at 7 p.m.
