Waiting to Stock the Truckee with Trout

Posted: Updated:

It's fishing season in the Truckee Meadows, at least in places where it's safe to do so. The speed and size of the Truckee River has forced many fishermen to find other places to go this year.

Not only is the river too dangerous, but the speed makes it too difficult to catch fish as well. But that's not the case at Sparks Marina where the  Nevada Department of Wildlife stocked the water with 7,000 rainbow trout on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s fish stocking marked the second time the sparks marina has received fish this season. Other ponds and lakes in the area have been given the same treatment.

However, this year the Truckee River has yet to be stocked with trout. Typically the Truckee is stocked by March, but this year's flows have yet to make that possible.

Chris Healy with the Nevada Department of Wildlife says fish won’t be stocked into the Truckee until late summer. He says fisherman and the hatcheries will have to be patient.

"They grow a little bit bigger and they do cost a little bit more to grow by then because you have to feed them, but we're eventually able to put some fish into the Truckee River that will provide sporting opportunity for our anglers," says Healy.

Kids and anglers can fish for free at Sparks Marina and any of Nevada’s public fishing spots without a fishing license or trout stamp this Saturday.
