Lake Lahontan Full for First Time in Years

Posted: Updated:

For the past few years Lake Lahontan has been pretty much empty, but this years thanks to the incredible winter we had the lake is full. People from all over Northern Nevada headed there this weekend to enjoy the sunshine and to receive free life jackets from Lyon County Sheriff's Search and Rescue.

As part of their 'Operation Life Vest', the Search and Rescue team hand out free life jackets to kids 13 years and younger, "We have people come back year after year as they grow out of their vests, we fit it. We want the parents there so the parents knows how to fit that vest properly so they don't just slip out of it," says Dennis Maginot the Vice Commander of Search and Rescue.

Now that the lake is full Lyon County want to warn people the dangers of being in the water without a life jacket, "A person who goes into the cold water whether it is a child or an adult they have a tenancy to suck in air. So that can cause a person to drown instantly," warns Maginot.

Now that there is water in Lahontan to play in, visitors were excited to be able to bring all their friends and family back to the lake, "I used to come here all the time until it dried up several years ago, this is actually my first time back since it got all the water back in it..It's great," said Matt Jorgensen of Reno.

One Carson City resident has been coming to Lahontan since he was a kid, "I love the water, I grew up on Lahontan and one summer we came out every weekend so it is awesome to have water again," said Jacob Council.
