Nevada Outfielder Michael Echavia Earns Mountain West Baseball Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Nevada outfielder Michael Echavia has earned Mountain West Baseball Player of the Week honors, while Fresno State junior Ricky Tyler Thomas was named MW Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played through Saturday, May 20, 2017. For Thomas, it is the second time he has been honored this season and the fifth of his career. It is the first MW weekly accolade of his career for Echavia.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
MICHAEL ECHAVIA, NEVADA
Junior, Outfielder, Pleasanton, California / Chabot College

  •          Nevada was 2-2 last week with a mid-week loss to UC Davis and a 2-1 MW series win over New Mexico to ensure a spot in the 2017 MW Baseball Championship.
  •          Batted .600 over the week (12-for-20) with eight RBI, seven runs scored, two doubles, one triple and one home run.
  •          Recorded a hit in every game with an on-base percentage of .619 and a slugging percentage of .950.
  •          Was 1-for-5 in the 7-4 loss against UC Davis.
  •          Went 2-for-5 with two runs scored in Thursday’s 5-2 victory against New Mexico.
  •          Was 5-for-5 in Friday’s 17-9 win against the Lobos with seven RBI, three runs scored, one triple and one home run.
  •          In the series finale, went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI in the 13-6 loss to New Mexico.
  •          Defensively, recorded 11 putouts and one assist from the outfield.

BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
RICKY TYLER THOMAS, FRESNO STATE
Junior, Left-Handed Pitcher, San Diego, California / Mira Mesa HS

  •          Won a 4-0 combined shutout of San Diego State on Thursday.
  •          Threw 6.2 innings in the start and gave up only three hits, not allowing a single Aztec past first base.
  •          Struck out seven batters and walked three.
