Posted: Updated:

A citizen's tip lead to the arrest of Sun Valley man charged with illegal dumping.

Around 8:20 a.m. on Thursday, May 18th, a witness reported illegal dumping in progress in open space along Chimney Drive, northwest of Sun Valley.

Officers found the suspect, now identified as 37 year old Brandon Kimpton of Sun Valley. He was found with a large pile of green waste that had just been dumped from the trailer attached to his vehicle.

Kimpton was arrested and charged with one count of unlawfully disposing of solid waste. It is his first offense and is a misdemeanor crime. Kimpton will be required to remove the illegally dumped debris.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office wants to emphasize the importance of reporting illegal dumping to keep our neighborhoods clean and safe. They offered some key tips to remember:

  • Junk, garbage, or debris on public property including tree branches, plant or grass clippings is illegal dumping
  • Report illegal dump sites through the WCSO app
  • If you see illegal dumping in progress call 911 or 775-785-WCSO (9726)
  • Do not engage with people dumping illegally, instead try to get identifying information like a license plate or description of their car
  • Never remove items from an illegal dump site
  • KTMB.org has information about alternatives to illegal dumping.
