Deserving Family Gets a Big Surprise

Posted: Updated:

When Tanisha Turner and her two girls arrived at school Wednesday morning, they never expected to receive a trip to Disneyland. It was a sweet surprise, and one they could really use. This trip is a chance for the family to make new memories together, following some tough times. Both girls lost their dads in two different shootings.

"I was homeless for two years prior to coming out here and my kids have seen a lot of of drive-by shootings and everything so this means a lot. Me coming out here and this opportunity that came up," said Turner.

Fernley has been a place of refuge for Tanisha and her two girls. Their doing really well in school. Jasmine even got a 4.0 her first semester here in Nevada. They're winning lots of awards too. Heaven got an award for attendance.

"We would have a void without them. That's for sure. They've meant a lot," said Principal Robert Jacobson.

They're starting to come out of their shell some too.

"Just hope they have fun. I hope they create a memory they won't forget," said Jacobson.

This will be a vacation with a lot of firsts.

"I've never been. I always wanted to go since I was a kid so I now got the chance to go and my kids they've been buzzing me about it," said Turner.

There is one ride their a little nervous about. The daughters have never flown in a plane before.

"I like the window seat so hopefully they do too," said Turner.

Turner says she's not sure which part she's looking forward to the most. They just want to experience it all.

"It feels good we're helping out a family and we're helping out others and at the same time we're bringing the community to witness that and inspire them to do the same," JFRodriguez from the radio station KRNG in Fernley.

The trip is a part of the station's Good News Project. They still have to narrow down dates for the trip.
