Posted: Updated:

University of Nevada (17-31, 11-14 MW) junior Mark Nowaczewski pitched a complete game in the Wolf Pack’s 4-1 victory over intrastate rival UNLV (18-34, 8-18 MW) to clinch the school’s first Governor’s Series trophy on Saturday night at Peccole Park.  The Governor’s Series presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold is a structured rivalry series that matches the Wolf Pack and Rebels in sports and academics.

A season-high 2,011 fans watched the home team win and it was the fourth consecutive crowd over 1,000.

Nevada takes the series and improves to 17-31 overall and 11-14 in MW play while the Rebels dropped to 18-34 and 8-18 in conference action.  The final game of the Mountain West weekend series is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.  Five Wolf Pack seniors will be honored prior to first pitch for their contributions to Nevada baseball.

Nowaczewski (5-5) was dominate all night earning his fifth win of the season as he allowed one run on six hits and struck out five.  The run allowed was a solo home run in the top of the second inning and then he pitched seven shutout innings.  At one point he retired 11 in a row before walking the first UNLV hitter in the top of the ninth but a Pack double play cleared the bases.  The final out was a strikeout swinging.

Nevada scored twice in the bottom of the first and never trailed in the 4-1 victory.  Grant Fennell’s double scored Jordan Pearce who reached on a single.  Fennell scored the second run of the inning on Michael Echavia’s single and it was 2-0 Wolf Pack.

UNLV’s lone run of the game came when Bryson Stott hit his first career home run leading off the second inning to close the gap to one.  Pack second base answered Stott with his fifth homer of the season to make a two-run cushion at 3-1.  In the sixth Fennell’s third hit of the night was a single to start the inning and he eventual scored on catcher Marco Valenzuela’s RBI single to make the final 4-1.

Nowaczewski tossed his third complete game in his last five starts to earn his fifth win of the season.  UNLV starter Garrett Poole (2-7) was tagged with the loss allowing all four runs to the Pack on eight hits.

Fennell (3-for-4,2R,RBI) finished with a game-high three hits, scored twice and had an RBI.  Echavia, Smith and Valenzuela also drove in a run each.

Stott (2-for-4,R,RBI) topped UNLV with two hits and drove in the Rebels lone run of the game.

Dillan Shrum extended his reach base streak to 27 games.
