Pack Softball Falls to SDSU in Regular Season Finale

Posted: Updated:

The Nevada softball team concluded its 2017 regular season on Saturday in front of its home crowd at Hixson Park against San Diego State. After battling back from five runs down to tie the score, the Wolf Pack fell to the Aztecs (31-19, 15-9 MW) by a score of 13-6, cementing its season record of 28-23 and 13-11 in Mountain West play.

Prior to Saturday’s game, the Pack honored seniors Shannon Kelly, Melissa Arriaga, Nikki Orozco, McKenna Isenberg and Raquel Martinez for their dedication and commitment to Nevada softball. The pregame ceremony was concluded with each of the seniors’ moms throwing out the first pitch to their daughters.

Despite the loss, Nevada has been selected for postseason play for the first time since 2009 and will compete in the inaugural Postseason National Invitational Softball Championships (NISC). As of May 12, the Pack is one of three schools from the MW that is participating the NISC Tournament, including Utah State and Boise State.

“We are excited for the opportunity to have earned the privilege to play in the postseason,” Nevada head coach Josh Taylor said. “Our girls have worked really hard all season long to earn this reward and we can’t wait to find out where we and who we are playing.”

The last time Nevada played in a postseason tournament was eight years ago when the Pack won the WAC regular season championship and competed in the NCAA Regionals. After the NCAA reveals its tournament members on Sunday, May 14th, Nevada will find out its opponents and locations throughout the Postseason NISC tournament.

On Saturday, the Pack struck first in its game against the Aztecs after freshman Mele Tausinga launched a solo shot over the left-field fence for her third home run of the season to give Nevada and early 1-0 lead. After SDSU put up six runs in the top of the fourth, Nevada responded with a monster inning of its own, crossing the plate five times in the bottom of the fifth.

The home half of the inning started when freshman Haley Burda singled up the middle for her second hit of the day. Kelly would pinch-run for Burda and came around to score, courtesy of freshman Sienna Swain’s third hit of the afternoon.

With runners on first and second, and one out in the inning, junior Erika Hansen stepped up to the plate and belted her team-high 12th home run of the season to bring Nevada within one run, 6-5. The three runs Hansen brought home on the play extended her program-record to 60 RBIs in a single season.

The Pack was not finished though, as Tausinga connected on her second solo home run of the day and knotted the score a six a side. Nevada finished its monster inning with five runs off of five hits. The Aztecs responded though, scoring seven unanswered runs over the course of the next two innings and win the game, 13-6.

Up next, Nevada will compete in the Postseason NISC Tournament on Tuesday, May 16th, where the Pack will find out its destination and opponents following the NCAA Tournament revealing on Sunday, May 14th.
