Grand Prix Helps Kick Off Tourist Season in Virginia City

Posted: Updated:

This weekend was the 46th Annual Virginia City Grand Prix, where thousands of racers from all over the country come to the city to race on the unique track.

"The last true Grand Prix type of road race there is, we are the only club that incorporates actual pavement in their race," explained Virginia City Motorcycle Club President, Donnie Bird.

This race helps kick off the tourist season in Virginia City, "Business is always good here during the race, the family comes up here, the guys go out on their bikes and the ladies spend all the money," jokes local Diamond Jim.

The past winter was hard for local businesses since tourists had trouble making it up to the historic city, but with warmer weather around the corner it has given hope to some of the businesses, "People are tired of being in the house and the snow so yeah they will be up, we will have a lot of people this summer. I think it might be a record  breaking summer," says Diamond Jim.

With events like the Grand Prix, it helps keeps these small businesses busy, "When there is an event like this with the motorcycles, and it is usually a three day weekend, and then we usually stay busy the whole weekend," says Dora Shafer of the Delta Gift Shop.

But it is not only the events that help bring in these tourists, but the unique city as well, "It is just the town and the whole atmosphere of the whole thing it is about being with friends and family in the RV park and just hanging out and having drinks," said racer Brad Rosbach.

Another tourist said she loved the scenery that came with the city as well as spending time with family, "I love the scenery and we all three like to ride motorcycles and I love the town and I love shopping here while he is racing and hanging out with my son," said Wendy Cervantes.
