The Food Bank's Impact Is Anything But Small

Posted: Updated:

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is a major hub for food pantries, rehab centers, low income day cares, and more throughout our area. They are one of several recipients of the Channel 2, 'Share Your Christmas Drive By Food Drive" happening Friday.

The Food Bank's impact is anything but small. "We're helping about 95,000 people every month," said Jocelyn Lantrip, Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

It's a mecca of sorts. Thousands of pounds of food is spread out far and wide. 90,000 square miles is their reach.

"140 agencies receive food from the Food Bank."

One of those agencies is STEP2, a rehab center for women overcoming substance abuse. 70 percent of their food comes from here and to give back, they volunteer.

"It's amazing to all the women. We're grateful and blessed and thankful," said STEP2 participant and Food Bank volunteer, Andrea Morton.

The fight against hunger is a David versus Goliath sort of battle. One in seven people in our area do not know where their next meal is coming from. Especially this time of year when utility bills tend to rise, the Food Bank sees families who just can't make ends meet.

"At the end of the day they are having to choose between rent and food," said Lantrip.

Because the need is great for food going out, so is the need for food coming in. The cliche, "every little bit counts" is no joke here. One can of food could be one meal and a donation of just one dollar is turned into three meals.

"All of us working together can make a big difference."

Maybe even a defining difference for those who depend on this bank for more than just food.

"Thank you so much and we appreciate it. We appreciate the help that we get here at the Food Bank," said Morton.

Please come with non-perishable food Friday, December 9, starting at 6 a.m. for our 24th annual "Share Your Christmas" food drive. We will be at the Grand Sierra Resort, the Governor's Mansion and the Carson Valley Inn in Minden until 6 p.m.
