Phil Nevin Joins San Francisco Giants as Third Base Coach

From the Reno Aces:

Following his third season as manager of the Reno Aces, Phil Nevin has accepted a position as the San Francisco Giants’ new third base coach, announced earlier today.

Nevin skippered the Aces to a 76-68 record in 2016, good for second in the Pacific Coast League’s Pacific Northern Division. In 2014 – his first year at the helm – he led the Aces to a franchise-tying-best record of 81-63, guiding them to the PCL Championship Series against Omaha before falling in five games, 3 to 2.

Through three seasons with Reno, Nevin posted a record of 227-205 (.525) while winning one Pacific Northern Division title and one Pacific Conference Championship crown, both during his inaugural season. His guidance resulted in 25 players receiving their first call to the Major Leagues, including Aces greats Nick Ahmed, Jake Barrett, Archie Bradley, Danny Dorn, Brandon Drury, Mike Freeman, Mitch Haniger, Kyle Jensen, Evan Marshall, Peter O’Brien and Braden Shipley, among others.

“I want to say thank you to the Reno Aces and all the great Aces fans for three awesome years,” said Nevin. “A lot of great relationships and friendships were made that will last a lifetime. It has been an honor to manage your [Reno’s] team and the city will always hold a special place in my heart.”

A former No. 1 overall pick by the Houston Astros in the 1992 MLB June Amateur Draft, Nevin played 12 seasons in the big leagues, batting .270 with 208 home runs over 1,217 games. He appeared for seven different organizations, including the Astros, Tigers, Angels, Padres, Rangers, Cubs and Twins.
