Cleanup Begins After Orr Ditch in Sparks Overflows

Posted: Updated:

Construction crews working on the Pyramid-McCarran Improvement Project are cleaning up after the Orr Ditch overflowed, causing damage to four homes, a church, and two modular buildings near Queen Way in Sparks. The ditch breached at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday night after record rainfall.

Regional Transportation Commission officials say the ditch failed because crews were installing a retaining wall for the improvement project and were not expecting the amount of rain that fell. Sandbags were put in place over the weekend, but not enough to hold the water.

Granite Construction, the contractor for the Pyramid-McCarran project, were on scene to quickly help residents protect their homes. They continued cleanup Monday morning and do not know how long clean up will take.

RTC says they will be going door-to-door along with the City of Sparks to talk with residents about the next steps including who will pay for the damage, which will most likely be in the hands of homeowners insurance and Granite Construction.

The expected completion date of the entire Pryamid-McCarran project is spring of 2018.
