A man has been arrested for fatally shooting another man near a gas station in Silver Springs, Nevada.

On October 13 around 4:45 pm, Lyon County Sheriff's Deputies say they were dispatched to Nevada Avenue and Highway 95A in Silver Springs regarding a fight. Deputies say that when they arrived on the scene, they found one subject who had been shot and died on the scene from injuries.

The deceased has been identified  as Robert Buchanan III a 48-year-old from Silver Springs.

Officials say that shortly afterwards, an individual who was believed to be involved in the alteration, showed up at the Silver Springs Sheriff's Office with injuries. They say he was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Officers have identified this person as Silver Springs resident, 45-year-old Santiago "Sonny" Fernandez. Police believe that there are other individuals involved and are continuing their investigations.

On Monday, October 17, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office says they arrested Fernandez in connection with the shooting death of Buchanan. Fernandez is currently being held at the Lyon County Detention Center in Yerington, charged with open murder, to include an enhancement for use of a deadly weapon, without bail.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office and the Lyon County District Attorney's Office, this deadly encounter is not the first act of violence between members of these two families and they have investigated other cases involving violence or threats of violence between these two families.

"Our deputies have spent many hours in hopes of helping the families resolve their issues," said Sheriff Al McNeil, "however, these cases are often difficult to resolve because of the emotions and the fact that witnesses are reluctant to become involved."

According to District Attorney Steve Rye, "There are three pending criminal court cases regarding incidents between these families."

Both Sheriff McNeil and the District Attorney Rye say this violence threatens the safety of this community and has come with a deadly price tag, and must stop now. Lyon County Sheriffs Office say they are increasing patrols for the Silver Springs area and in cooperation with the District Attorney's Office incidents of retaliation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with through the fullest of the criminal justice system.

Sheriff McNeil and District Attorney Rye are urging those persons with information relating to this case to contact the Sheriff's Office and assist law enforcement in bringing those responsible to justice. We are asking community support in reporting any acts of suspected retaliation.

The investigation of this case is ongoing. Anyone with any information regarding this case is asked to please contact the Lyon County Sheriffs Office at 775-463-6620 or Secret Witness at 775-322-4900, www.secretwitness.com
