Washoe County Health District to Implement New Food Establishment Rating System

The Washoe County Health District says it will start implementing a new food establishment rating system this November. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have identified foodborne illness risk factors and public health interventions that when addressed during an inspection of a food establishment should lead to a reduction in the occurrence of foodborne illness and to an increased protection for consumer health. The new rating system identifies the critical violations that could contribute to foodborne illness .

The Washoe County Health District Environmental Health Services is offering multiple training workshops to educate the public and the restaurant industry on the new rating system. Each workshop is one hour long and free to attend. No registration is required. The workshops will be held in September 2016 and a schedule will be posted on www.washoeeats.com in July 2016. 

The new rating system uses a color coded scale, similar to a red, yellow, green stop light. The easy to recognize rating system will assist the public in understanding the inspection results of all food establishments inspected by the Washoe County Health District. 

GREEN: Pass (Limited Violations Observed) 
YELLOW: Conditional Pass (Critical Violations, Corrections Required) 
RED: Closure (Imminent Threat to Public Health and Safety)
