Aces Earn Series Split with Nashville

Posted: Updated:

Shelby Miller pitched into the eighth inning, and Peter O’Brien hit his first homer in three weeks as the Reno Aces knocked off the Nashville Sounds, 3-2, on Monday night at First Tennessee Park. Miller’s impressive outing came with nine strikeouts, moving his total for Reno to 45 through 38.0 innings.

The Aces (65-58) struggled early against recently-named Pacific League Coast Pitcher of the Week Jharel Cotton, failing to have a base runner through the first four innings. With one out in the fifth, O’Brien drilled his 22nd homer to left, ending Cotton’s run of 13 consecutive batters retired to begin the game.

Reno added the deciding runs in the sixth, pushing their lead to 3-0. Todd Glaesmann (@toddglaesmann22) reached on an infield single and Ronnie Freeman (@Freeforall16) walked, setting up a sacrifice bunt by Ildemaro Vargas (@ildemaro_tigre). Following a strikeout and intentional walk, Kyle Jensen (@TheKJensen42) pounded a two-run single through the left side of the infield. The two-out knock pulled the 28-year-old slugger within two RBI of Peter O’Brien’s franchise-record 107 set last year.

Nashville (70-53) stranded five base runners on the evening, going just 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Singles in the second, third and fourth innings were all erased, thanks to Freeman nabbing all three runners on stolen base attempts.

Two singles in the seventh nearly gave the Sounds their first run, but a strong throw from Jensen in left nailed Jaycob Brugman at second, narrowly ahead of Colin Walsh crossing home plate.

The Sounds finally broke through in the eighth against Miller for two runs. A double by Rangel Ravelo and triple off the bat of Arismendy Alcantara knocked the right-hander out of the game. Two groundouts got Jared Miller (@JaredMiller24) and Evan Marshall (@emarsh31) through the frame, before Yuhei Nakaushiro and Silvino Bracho (@silvinobracho) recorded the final three outs in the ninth. Bracho earned his 15th save in 17 chances with his two-out performance.

Miller (4-1) shaved his ERA from 3.82 to 3.55 in the win, while Cotton (2-1) suffered his first loss in three starts for the Sounds.

Jack Reinheimer (@Reinheimer_08) collected two of Reno’s six hits, both of the infield variety.

For a second straight game, the Aces’ pitching staff did not walk a single batter, marking the fifth such occurrence this season.

The Aces continue their eight-game road trip with the opener of a four-game set at Memphis on Tuesday night. First pitch from AutoZone Park is set for 4:35 p.m. PT. Reno has not yet named a starter, while the Redbirds will send righty Kurt Heyer (2-1, 5.54) to the mound.
