Immunizations Required for Many Students as School Begins

Posted: Updated:

Minute Clinics in Northern Nevada are encouraging parents to check on their children's shot records, especially as the new school year starts up.

Before many kids can even go back to school, some are required to have certain vaccinations.

Two of the state required vaccines that many parents are looking for are the Tdap booster protecting against tetanus and the whooping cough and also the meningitis vaccination needed for students living in college dorms.

Shendry Thom, nurse practitioner at the Minute Clinic on Robb Drive, says recently some parents have been choosing against getting vaccines for their children.

“Parents are just concerned about their children, concerned about the number of vaccines they get, they read different things online and that's why I want to really encourage people to make sure that you look at reputable sites and come and talk to us," says Thom.

Thom says while parents do have their concerns, vaccines are still the most effective way to protect children against illnesses.

As school starts, she's also educating parents and students about other back to school health subjects like acne, diet and sports physicals.

“Right now is just the best time to get in, obviously school's not going to let you in if you don't get things done and you want to protect your child as soon as possible to protect them from preventable disease," says Thom.
