Health Watch: Escape Reno Workout

Posted: Updated:

The next time you plan a night on the town, you might consider starting out at Reno’s historic U.S. Post Office. "You guys look awesome!" you will hear as you make your way towards a room in the back of ‘The Basement’ that, at first glance, looks like a nightclub. It is called Escape and it is Reno’s newest micro gym.

Owners Christina Ghiggeri and Amy Burkett, who also own Soul Space in downtown Reno, are offering a bright new fitness concept in the dark! "It's all black lights, so you kind of just get to be in your zone when you're in it,” explains Christina. Amy adds, "We get a lot of comments on the anonymous factor of it; that people are in here and no one really knows that they're here."

Spin bikes now fill what was once an old concrete storage room. On the dark walls, you can watch live music videos while you work out. "You get to really enjoy something other than focusing on how hard you're working." In an adjacent room, you will find hanging heavy bags for dark room boxing. Before and in between punches, trainer Karen Isbister puts her 45-minute classes through Tabata training - or high-intensity intervals. When it comes to her jab-cross combos, it's all about technique...even in the dark. "You're going to get a great workout: upper body, lower body, your core, your abs, your back."

The dark room workout environment has always been a dream for Amy and Christina who – combined -- have more than 20-years of experience in the fitness industry. They also own Soul Escape in downtown. "We live it and love it and it's what we do." Now with this new endeavor they are excited to offer you a unique way to break a sweat, to feel empowered, to clear your head and to, well…. just escape. "Just for people to step away from their everyday lives, the everyday grind and be able to come in here and just sweat."
