Someone 2 Know: Andrew Alcala

Posted: Updated:

In today's day in age, family dinner looks different. The talk has been replaced by tablets. The fun has been replaced by phones.

13-year-old Andrew Alcala noticed.

"We are sometimes more obsessed with those than doing stuff together," said Alcala.

He loves his family. He also loves food.

"When I was little, I used to cook for my mom, my dad, and my grandparents."

He didn't like what was happening with his family.

"Everybody is gathered and nobody is communicating with each other," said Andrew's mom, Randa.

So to solve the problem, Andrew made a book.

"The cookbook is made to encourage families to cook together," said Andrew.

As you flip through, you'll find recipes, from enchilada lasagna to pineapple coconut bread. They're all designed with the family in mind.

"How could we make this simple for young kids to do, not just advanced cookers?"

When we joined Andrew he made us his beef barbacoa sandwich. It's kinda like a Sloppy Joe. Even Andrew's younger brother, Frankie joins in.

"The more they help, the quicker it gets done," explained Andrew.

It takes about 10 minutes total to cook.

Andrew's cookbook, called "Flavor Fusions" features 28 recipes.
