Pack Baseball Opens Road Series with Win

Posted: Updated:

– Senior LHP Christian Stolo retired 15 straight batters between the third and eighth innings and the Nevada baseball team rallied past Texas State for a series-opening win, 6-3, on Friday evening at Bobcat Ballpark.

After the Bobcats (20-11) opened a three-run lead in the second frame, the Wolf Pack scored four runs in the seventh and two in the ninth. Nevada – who has won nine of its past 11 games – improves to 14-13 on the season, its first time being above .500 since Feb. 23 (3-2).

Stolo picked up his second win of the season, bouncing back from a three-run second inning with six straight shutout innings. The local product allowed three runs on 10 hits with no walks in 7.2 innings of work, which was his second longest outing of the season. The Pack scored six runs on seven hits as sophomores Cole Krzmarzick and Grant Fennell each tallied two hits and one RBI.

Texas State’s Tanner Hill hit a leadoff home run in the second inning and the Bobcats opened a 3-0 lead after notching seven hits and batting around its lineup.

Stolo – the reigning Mountain West Pitcher of the Year – was dynamite on the mound from then on. The Bobcats were held just one hit in the game’s final six innings, while Stolo retired 15 straight batters at one point to allow Nevada to rally.

After being held to three hits in the first six innings, the Pack’s offense hit stride in the seventh frame with four runs to take the lead. With no outs and two runners in scoring position, sophomore TJ Friedl and senior Justin Hazard each hit RBI sacrifice bunts. Fennell tied the game with an RBI groundout before freshman Kaleb Foster gave Nevada the lead with an RBI sacrifice fly.

Nevada scored two insurance runs on two outs in the ninth inning as Fennell doubled and Foster and junior Justin Bridgman each drew walks to load the bases. Fennell scored on a wild pitch and redshirt freshman Keaton Smith drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-3 in favor of the Wolf Pack.

The Wolf Pack and Bobcats return to the diamond on Saturday for game two. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. PT at Bobcat Ballpark.
