Sophomore Jennifer Purcell went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI and junior McKenna Isenberg struck out four in a complete game shutout in the Nevada softball team’s 4-0 victory over New Mexico on Saturday afternoon in front of 442 at Hixson Park.
Isenberg, who only allowed four hits on the day, improved to 9-4 on the season with the win while Purcell registered her team-best 12th multi-hit game of the season for the Wolf Pack (25-7, 6-2 MW). Saturday’s attendance figure was the largest crowd at Hixson Park since Jayme King Day on April 13, 2014 against Boise State.
Isenberg kept the Lobo bats at bay all afternoon starting off with a 1-2-3 first inning and tallying two of her four strikeouts in the top of the second.
After Isenberg sat New Mexico down in order again in the top of the fourth, senior Jasmine Jenkins led-off the home half of the fourth with a single through the left side. Purcell was the next batter and sent a 3-1 pitch to the opposite field for a two-run home run to give Nevada a 2-0 lead.
It was all Isenberg needed but Purcell produced some much needed insurance runs with her second home run of the game in the bottom of the sixth that extended the Wolf Pack lead to 4-0.
Nevada will wrap-up the three-game series with the Lobos Sunday at 12 p.m.
